Sometimes, its not just the new comics where we can pull inspiration. Sometimes, we search through a longbox of older comics and come across a rare gem that you have never heard of before, but once you see it, you have no idea how you could have ever missed it.

That is where this week’s Panel of the Week comes from. Fantastic Four Roast #1 tells a non-canon tale of the Fantastic Four from 1982 on the night of their celebrity roast. Everyone has come out to make jokes at their expense, but they are also there to show them how much they appreciate them. It’s a fun read!

The panel that takes the coveted spot is actually the cover. There is so much going on and so many characters that you could look at it for hours to examine it, and that’s what makes it this week’s, Panel of the Week!

In the comic, Spider-Man and Deadpool teamed up against the machinations of everybody’s favorite villain – Arcade!

With the day won, Deadpool and Spider-Man have to dispatch their villain. It’s their clever way of taking care of him that wins them the acclaimed spot of panel of the Week.

“But how did they do that?” you ask.

Why, by dropping him off at the X-Men’s doorstep – because “he’s somehow become part of the whole X-Men deal.”

Review: Marvel Legacy #1

Cover: The cover is great. I throwback to the comics of the 90’s with its expensive, collector feel. It has a shine to it that give the appearance of the art moving from black and white to color. But, looking at the gate-fold picture, I can’t help but want more X-Men representation other than Storm.

Pg 1: Interesting hook right off the bat with Mjolnir alone on the ground one million years ago. I wonder who the narrator is. My guess is Cap.

Pg 2-3: We see a super-team of the past, Odin and the Phoenix. Odin appears to be having trouble controlling the hammer and we hear talk of a great monster that fell from the sky. It’s funny, the Phoenix has a thing for redheads.

Marvel Legacy #1 detailPg 4-5: We now run into the rest of this super team that appears to have a Panther, Hulk like creature with the power of Starbrand, a sorcerer supreme, an Iron Fist, and a Ghost Rider who has just lost his fiery Mastodon. They assemble in front of the fallen Celestial.

Pg 6-7: Awesome splash panel! The narrator is talking about legacy, and what the heroes mean to the Earth they protect.

Pg 8-9: Fast forward to now and the return of Robbie Reyes to the comic scene. I last saw his character in an issue of Gwenpool of all places. He has apparently sleep driven his car from L.A. to South Africa and has had dreams of his earlier counterpart.

Pg 10-11: Ghost Rider runs into Starbrand. I know next to nothing about the character but they let us know that it is “the Earth’s inherent defense mechanism;” simple enough. He intends to stop the Ghost Rider from searching out what is buried.

Pg 12-13: Jotunheim, realm of the giants. Loki is plotting with some giants in name only. I love that concept, that there are runts of the litter in giant society that are the size of regular people. Anyway, Loki sends them out to fetch something for him from SHIELD.

Pg 14-15: We now learn that because of Secret Empire, SHIELD is shutting down. The frost “runts” attack and heroes arrive.

Marvel Legacy #1 detailPg 16-17: Those heroes are Cap (Sam Wilson) and Thor (Jane Foster). This is the last outing for Sam as Captain America now that the real Steve is back. Ironheart arrives to help and in one panel we get a lot of information on what’s happening in the world: There is a nationwide manhunt for Deadpool, Wilson Fisk is in the running for Mayor of New York, and people are wondering where Captain America (Steve) is.

Pg 18-19: Those looking for Steve are wondering how he will answer for what has been done in his name and that is a good question, you can’t just sweep this under the rug. Also, I find it hilarious that there is a “Roxx News” in the Marvel U. Also, my earlier guess of the narrator is wrong because they comment on Steve. Over at Asgardia, we see the Odinson drowning his sorrows in mead. An Asgardian vizier who foresees the future is standing on the Bifrost and says “Mangog is Coming,” then jumps to his death. Who or what is Mangog?

Pg 20-21: At a Stark facility in New Jersey, Tony Stark’s comatose body has gone missing and we go back to the Starbrand and Ghost Rider fight.

Pg 22-23: Starbrand talks about protecting the world from themselves, the heroes and we go to an archaeological dig in South Africa. Two SHIELD agents are playing out their last day on the job when the site explodes.

Pg 24-25: It was actually Starbrand crashing into the site and he kills the two agents with a wave of his hand, remarking on how he is being drawn to the site. The archaeologist decides to keep digging. We next find Deadpool confessing his sins in a bathroom stall and then being shot by cops for the murder of Phil Coulson. I’m still a believer that Coulson Lives!

Marvel Legacy #1 detailPg 26-27: Dr. Strange and Iron Fist talk about their shared prehistoric dream and we learn that Norman Osborn tried to break into the Sanctum Sanctorum to secure a source of power for himself. At Avenger’s Mansion, Jarvis remarks to Nadia Pym that he feels this existential pull that something is off, but can’t place his finger on it. But reader, if you look closely at the founding Avengers statue in the background, you can see a change to the lineup. A new person, Voyager, stands with the team. But, what does this mean for the history of the Avengers and how did it change?

Pg 28-29: Is this the start of a new incarnation of the Avengers? Falcon, Thor, and Ironheart? I can dig it, they have a good rapport with one another. Plus, it’s hilarious how Riri messed up her chance to say Avengers Assemble.

Pg 30-31: The ice runt gets away with Loki’s mystery package and I have no idea what is inside. Overlooking the city, the last two members of the Fantastic Four remark on if they are even remembered and if they are needed anymore. Thing reassures Johnny that they are needed then fires a 4 signal flare into the sky signaling some awesome nostalgia for the old days of marvel Comics.

Pg 32-33: And what may be the craziest thing so far in the comics, we see that Wakanda now has its own throneworld and intergalactic empire in another star system? This is actually a throwback to Hickman’s Secret Wars #12 when T’challa sent Wakandans to space to “drag mankind to the stars on the back of Wakandan science.” Such a cool throwback to that. Speaking of space, at an Alpha Flight deep space monitoring station, a signal comes in from Sakaar (Planet Hulk) for the Hulk to return because they need his help!

Pg 34-35: Ghost Rider takes down Starbrand with a penance stare. And I mean takes down! He blew him up! But, before he did, he mentioned the Final Host, I wonder if he is talking about the Celestials. In the past, many hosts of them have come to earth to judge mankind.

Marvel Legacy #1 detailPg 36-37: Our archaeologist friends have found the fallen Celestial, this does not bode well.

Pg 38-39: The celestial says “Summon the final host, cleanse them all.” Dumbledore said it best, “Dark and difficult times lie ahead.” Also, the Avengers defeat the frost giants and because it wasn’t on the manifest, Loki’s mysterious package escapes unnoticed.

Pg 40-41: The Frost Runt escapes with package #4-1939 and gets hit by a beer truck and it looks like the driver has a Galactic travel guide and a hank Williams CD.

Pg 42-43: The driver has claws!

Pg 44-45: Young Jean visits the grave of Wolverine and finds it open. The adamantium shell that covered Wolverine’s body is sliced open. How?

Pg 46-47: The driver of the beer truck is Wolverine! The original, not the old man, not X-23, the original, beer drinkin’, Wolverine! And the best use of a Frost Giant’s carcass as a beer cooler goes to…

Pg 48-49: Wolverine has item #4-1939, a blue glowing rock. Infinity stone maybe? Yes, confirmed by Gamora on the next page. And Loki, not being dismayed at the loss of his stone, finds the fallen Celestial.

Pg 50-51: Our narrator is waxing poetic then gets cut off right before they say “fantastic.”

Pg 52: Our narrator is Valeria Richards with her brother Franklin. The children of the Fantastic Four’s Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman. When we left them they were out exploring new universes after Secret Wars, but it sounds like she may want to come home.

The Verdict

This was a great book and I hope you enjoyed reading/reacting to it with me. This really did a great job of setting up the Marvel Universe.

So many great stories have been set up:

  • Steve Rogers looking for redemption
  • Mangog is coming to Asgardia
  • The search for Tony Stark
  • The legacy of the Fantastic Four
  • Wakandans in space
  • Return to Planet Hulk
  • Deadpool’s fall from grace, and
  • the hunt for the Infinity Stones!

My only regret is that there was not a lot of reference to the mutants and X-Men, but getting Wolverine back kind of makes it up for me.

I just wish that in the future, we can have a more balanced Marvel Universe that isn’t favored to one side or the other. But, I’ll keep on reading because this is something to definitely look forward to!
