New comic books hit store shelves every Wednesday morning. That’s why we’re here – the day before – with our picks for Tomorrow’s Top Comics!
Each week, Read a Comic Crew members assemble to highlight the comics we’re most looking forward to in our pull bins. See our favorites for Wednesday, Nov 29, 2017 after the fold.*
To kick things off, more than one of us this week are looking forward to…
Mystik U #1
Solicit: Leave the world of the mundane behind and step through the magical doors of Mystik U! After a tragic accident, a young Zatanna Zatara, under the guidance of Rose Psychic, enrolls in a mysterious university that teaches its students how to master their unique brands of magic. Will Zatanna fit in with her new classmates (Enchantress, Sargon the Sorcerer, Faust and more!) and unlock her true potential? Find out in this exciting bimonthly miniseries from novelist Alisa Kwitney (DESTINY) and Mike Norton (Revival, Runaways)!
Ashlie: I always like different spins on characters when it’s in a fun way… Mystik U is a re-imagining of the college life of four pre-established DC magic characters and a fifth new character as they work their way through college with a little magic thrown in. I’ve been looking forward to this limited series since it was solicited in Previews- the whole premise seems like a lot of fun.
Phil: A new 48-page bi-monthly series featuring a young Zatanna Zatara. I’m not too unfamiliar with this character, but this side of the DCU always intrigues me so I’ll hop on and check this out.
Solicit: Glenbrook goes to war – and the U.S.Avengers are caught in the middle, but do they side with humanity – or the alien invaders? It’s a final battle for the soul of America – over a million light-years from Earth!
Randy: Cannonball Run Pt. 2, I’m really interested to see what happens to Cannonball as it looks like he is in the middle of an alien plot to take over Earth. Part 1 was very enjoyable.
Ruben: The current arc has started off really wild and I’m super excited to see where they take it. The U.S. Avengers has been a surprise hit for me I picked up #1 for a cool varient cover and loved the series since.
We’re also looking forward to these new comics:
Batman: Creature Of The Night #1
Solicit: Young Bruce Wainwright lost his parents in a violent crime…and in the real world, no superheroes exist to save the day. But as grief and rage builds inside Bruce until he feels he can’t keep it inside anymore, something strange starts taking wing in the Gotham night! Perhaps Bruce’s grief isn’t inside him after all?
Ashlie: Just like my other pick – this too is a new spin on a character. This title follows in the footsteps of Superman: Secret Identity – giving a new spin on the childhood trauma of Bruce Wayne in a world where superheroes don’t exist.
Cinema Purgatorio #13
Solicit: The finest anthology in comics today continues. Join a master class of sequential artisans as they spin stories to terrify and delight. Now showing: Cinema Purgatorio by Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill, A More Perfect Union by Max Brooks and Gabriel Andrade, Code Pru by Garth Ennis and Raulo Caceres, Modded by Kieron Gillen and Nahuel Lopez, and The Vast by Christos Gage and Gabriel Andrade.
Phil: Alan Moore’s all-star horror anthology returns! And hey – Max Brooks!
Moon Knight #189
Solicit: The path of the Sun King gets closer to Moon Knight. But Marc’s got problems of his own. A man known as The Truth is driving people to suicide. Thank goodness Marc’s got his personalities under control. He DOES have them under control, right?
Ruben: It’s Egyptian sun god vs Egyptian moon god in this new story. Everyone knows I’m a big Moon Knight guy and the past few runs have been awesome so my bar is set pretty high for this new creative team.
X-Men: Blue #16
Solicit: What do you get you get when you mix five time-displaced teens, a time machine, and one fractured timeline? You get Jean Grey, Scott Summers, Bobby Drake, Hank McCoy and Warren Worthington III — impromptu time cops!
Randy: Beginning the Cross Time Capers story line. More time travel goodness? Maybe they will finally tell us how the original 5 X-Men can be in the present day without messing up the timeline besides saying “because Secret Wars.”
